U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will soon “officially” ban the use of the term “artificial intelligence” and the abbreviation AI. The president previously signed an order requiring the name “superintelligence” to be used in official documents.
“When will The Wall Street Journal start calling Artificial Intelligence (AI), a very inappropriate and imprecise name, SI (Superintelligence), a name that virtually everyone is using or will soon be using?” the president of the United States wrote in a post on Truth Social. “We are soon officially BANNING the term ‘AI/Artificial Intelligence’ in all appropriate documents and everywhere else because of its imprecision,” he announced.
As early as September, Trump signed an order requiring the term SI to be used in official government documents. The agreement on voluntary controls on artificial intelligence, signed by him and the heads of technology companies, was titled the “White House Superintelligence Accords.”
Trump argues that the name poorly reflects the nature of the technology and that the adjective “artificial” diminishes it. He settled on the new name after holding an online poll on his social media platform. “Superintelligence” beat out “higher intelligence” and “extreme intelligence.” The president also announced that he would start calling the media “artificial news” instead of his previous nickname for them, “fake news,” although he has used both terms since then.
