A federal court in New York has sentenced the Alexander brothers to 30 years in prison each for sex trafficking. The brothers lived in Miami. The sentence was announced Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Federal Judge Valerie Caproni, sitting in Manhattan, sentenced Tal Alexander, 40, and twins Oren and Alon, both 39. A jury found them guilty on all counts. The verdict came in March. Oren and Tal were known as luxury real estate brokers in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. Alon held a position at the family’s security company.
Each prison sentence is followed by 10 years of supervised release. According to the judge, the brothers will have to take part in treatment programs for sex offenders. Oren and Alon will each pay a $300,000 fine, and Tal will pay $350,000. Attorneys for both sides will determine the amount of restitution for the victims.
Prosecutors had sought life in prison for each brother. The defense asked for 15 years, the mandatory minimum for these charges. Caproni called a life sentence “draconian.”
According to prosecutors, the brothers spent more than a decade using their wealth, position and social status to lure women and harm them. The victims reportedly included two teenage girls. At the sentencing hearing, some of the women made statements about the impact of the crimes. The hearing lasted about six hours. None of the brothers testified at trial, but each spoke before the sentence was announced.
Federal prosecutor Jamie McDonald said in a statement that the sentence shows that crimes of this kind will be met with severe punishment. The brothers deny committing the crimes. Their attorneys have said previously that they will appeal.
