New York State has recorded a sharp rise in flu cases. In the week ending Oct. 17, 3,526 cases were confirmed by laboratory testing, about 400% more than in the same period last year. Amid the growing number of infections, State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald urged state residents on Monday to get vaccinated against the flu and the coronavirus.
According to the New York State Department of Health, 233 people were hospitalized with the flu during the week in question. A year earlier, in the same period, 668 infections and only 46 hospitalizations were recorded. In 59 of the state’s 62 counties, the number of cases rose or remained elevated, which officials say is unusual this early in the flu season.
The most cases were reported in counties including Jefferson, Chenango, Sullivan, Orange, Westchester, Nassau, Kings, the Bronx and New York. Influenza A accounted for 90% of infections, while influenza B accounted for 8%.
State officials also note that the number of flu vaccinations is lower than in previous years. The state health commissioner urged residents to get vaccinated, including against COVID-19.
“Because the respiratory illness season started early this year, I encourage all eligible New Yorkers, especially those at higher risk, to protect their health by getting seasonal COVID-19 and flu vaccines,” Dr. James McDonald said.
He stressed that vaccination is the most effective protection against severe illness and related complications.
Flu symptoms usually appear within two to three days of infection. They most often include fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, sore throat and a stuffy nose. Most patients recover within two weeks, but the risk of complications is higher for seniors, young children, pregnant women, nursing home residents and people with chronic conditions, including asthma, diabetes and heart disease.
State authorities recommend vaccination, regular hand washing, avoiding contact with sick people and staying home when symptoms of infection appear.
