Protesters Block Brooklyn Bridge: ‘Stop Shooting at Us’

Must read

At least 14 people were detained Wednesday during a protest on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Demonstrators blocked traffic heading toward Brooklyn to protest the actions of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), gun violence and the New York Police Department (NYPD). According to officers, the blockade began around 12:30 p.m. and lasted more than half an hour.

Participants formed a line on the roadway, then sat down on the bridge surface, preventing cars from passing. Protesters held large yellow banners with black lettering reading “Stop Shooting at Us” and “Stop Shooting Our Neighbors.” To the sound of drums, they chanted, clapped and also called for the dismissal of the NYPD commissioner, shouting: “Fire Jessica Tisch now!”

Footage recorded by witnesses shows that the blockade caused serious traffic disruptions. Cars were stuck in a backup stretching many blocks while the demonstrators remained on the roadway. Police eventually intervened, detaining at least 14 protesters.

The demonstration ended shortly after 1 p.m. Once the blockade was cleared, all lanes on the Brooklyn Bridge were reopened to drivers.
