Illinois ranked only 33rd in a ranking of the best states to work in, published by WalletHub. Nebraska took first place thanks to an unemployment rate of 3%, steady growth in the number of jobs and high job stability.
North Dakota came in second, followed by Minnesota in third, South Dakota in fourth and New Hampshire in fifth. West Virginia was ranked the worst state to work in.
The ranking was based on 34 indicators of labor market health and economic conditions in individual states. People looking for new career opportunities and deciding where to work should consider more than just the size of a paycheck. Factors such as the unemployment rate, job stability, employee benefits and commute time can play a significant role in finding the right job.
A new WalletHub analysis ranked all 50 states using 34 indicators of labor market strength and economic health to determine which ones offer workers the best conditions. Illinois’ low position stems primarily from the fact that the state places near the bottom nationally in two key categories. The first is employment opportunities, defined as the number of job openings relative to the state’s total population; in this category, Illinois ranked 47th. The second is the unemployment rate, where Illinois also placed 47th.
