Florida Poll: Voters Back Deporting Criminals, Not Everyone Else

Must read

A new poll by Wave Polling and Research finds that Florida voters support deporting immigrants convicted of serious crimes. A majority, however, oppose removing long-term U.S. residents who have no criminal convictions.

Florida Politics reported the poll results on Oct. 28. The survey was conducted by Wave Polling and Research, a Washington-based firm. According to the data, Florida voters want a secure border but do not support mass deportations.

Florida Politics reports that 70% of respondents want authorities to focus on people in the country illegally who commit serious crimes. At the same time, those respondents want to give people who work and pay taxes a chance to resolve their status. Nine in 10 respondents support deporting undocumented immigrants convicted of violent crimes. Meanwhile, 53% say that removing people with no criminal record who have lived in the country for years goes too far.

Six in 10 Florida voters say mass deportations of immigrant workers hurt the economy and raise families’ cost of living. The rest consider them necessary to protect jobs and enforce the law.

About 60% of those surveyed in Florida think President Donald Trump is paying too much attention to deportations and too little to the economy. Among voters nationwide, nearly two-thirds share that view. According to Florida Politics, G. Elliott Morris, head of Wave Polling, noted that for the first time in a decade, the balance in how the two parties are rated on deportations has shifted. The parties are now rated similarly, which represents a shift of 11 percentage points.

Florida Politics also cites earlier Wave Polling research. According to that research, 52% of registered voters in Florida oppose creating a legal status that would allow long-term immigrants to stay in the country but would bar them from applying for citizenship. Thirty percent expressed support for such a solution. The full poll results, including the methodology, can be found in the original Florida Politics article.
