A Chicago woman called 911 last weekend to report herself for dangerous driving. She was under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on Interstate 65 in Jasper County, Indiana, according to Indiana State Police.
According to police, a dispatcher received the call after 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The caller was Meisha Thomas, 42, of Chicago. Dispatchers were able to pinpoint her location as she drove south on I-65 near the Lowell exit in the southern part of Lake County, Indiana. Indiana State Police troopers were sent to the scene. When they arrived, they spotted a vehicle matching the caller’s description traveling between 30 and 50 mph in a zone with a 70 mph speed limit. The woman had already left Lake County and entered Jasper County, still traveling on I-65.
Police said the vehicle was drifting from lane to lane, disrupting traffic and forcing other drivers to brake or maneuver to avoid colliding with her car. Indiana State Police said Thomas initially ignored the lights and sirens as troopers tried to stop her, but eventually pulled over in the left lane. State police said she slurred her words, had bloodshot eyes and poor coordination, and smelled strongly of alcohol. Police said Thomas told them she had left a casino in Gary, Indiana, and was on her way home to Chicago. However, according to police, she had driven about 36 miles in the wrong direction.
State police said the woman was too intoxicated to safely perform a field sobriety test and refused to comply with Indiana’s implied consent law, under which driving a vehicle amounts to tacit consent to a breath test, blood test or other chemical test if an officer suspects the driver is under the influence of alcohol. Police later obtained a search warrant and had her blood drawn at a local hospital.
Police said Thomas repeatedly made inappropriate sexual comments and made advances toward an officer, including trying to kiss him as he fastened her seat belt. As a result, she was also charged with assault on a public safety official. Thomas was arrested and faces three additional charges: operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and careless driving. She was taken to the Jasper County jail. Police did not say whether bail was set or when she is due in court.
