Flooding Forces Changes to 25 Polling Places in 7 Florida Counties

The Florida Division of Elections published a list of polling place changes Monday evening after sudden flooding in seven counties. The changes affect a total of 25 polling places.

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order after flash flood warnings in Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties. The order allows local supervisors of elections to designate new polling places where existing ones are unsafe or cut off by flooded roads.

The most changes were made in St. Lucie County (11 polling places) and Brevard County (eight). Two polling places were moved in Palm Beach County. Only voters assigned to precincts affected by the flooding have to use the temporary locations. Signs at the original polling places are supposed to direct voters to the new locations.

The numbers in media reports differ because the list changed during the day. Florida Politics reported 19 polling places in Brevard, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties. The Local 10 version is more recent and includes 25 changes.

In Palm Bay, the hardest-hit city, about 22 inches (about 560 mm) of rain fell in a 24-hour period. Rescue operations and evacuations took place there. Roads were closed, at least temporarily, in Palm Bay, West Melbourne, Vero Beach and Port St. Lucie, among other places.

Brightline suspended service between West Palm Beach and Orlando because of high water on the tracks in Brevard County. The suspension is expected to remain in effect until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. Trains between West Palm Beach and Miami are running normally. After the water recedes, crews will inspect the tracks, signals and crossings. Passengers with affected reservations are to be notified directly.

Polling places are open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters can check their precinct using the state’s polling place lookup tool. Current information on Brightline service is available at GoBrightline.com, in the company’s app and on its social media.
