No School Tuesday for Chicago Students as Many Schools Serve as Polling Places

Must read

It is Election Tuesday in the United States. Polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Under Illinois law, any school that is not holding classes on Election Day may be used by local authorities as a polling place.

That is why students at many schools have the day off today. Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the largest school district in Illinois, has no classes today. Many other suburban school districts are also closed, including Wilmette District 39, Indian Prairie District 204 and Oswego Community Unit District 308. Some districts, private schools and universities did not cancel classes today.

Although there have been attempts in the past to make Election Day a federal holiday, none has succeeded so far. As a result, banks, federal offices, including courts, and most businesses are open. Under Illinois law, employees are entitled to two hours of paid leave on Election Day to vote.

However, all Secretary of State offices that serve drivers (DMV facilities) are closed today. Some public libraries in Illinois are serving as polling places today. Because Election Day is not a federal holiday, all post offices will be open and mail delivery will proceed as normal.
