Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser was elected the state’s 44th governor on Tuesday. He defeated Republican Victor Marx and independent candidate Greg Lopez. Jena Griswold will become attorney general.

The Associated Press called the race for Weiser at 7 p.m., just after polls closed. According to data as of 9 p.m., Weiser had nearly 62% of the vote, Marx slightly under 33% and Lopez less than 3%. The results are unofficial and could still change as ballots are counted.

Weiser will succeed Jared Polis, who was barred from seeking another term. Democrats will have held power in the state without interruption for 20 years. Weiser has been attorney general since 2019. Earlier, he worked at the Department of Justice under Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Marx, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, has never held public office.

Weiser said he would govern in a different style than Polis, whom he described as a governor who did not listen enough and was insufficiently inclined to seek compromise. He named data centers as his first legislative priority. Marx said he called Weiser to concede.

Democrat Jena Griswold won the race for attorney general. She defeated Republican Michael Allen, a district attorney from Colorado Springs. Griswold is the current secretary of state. The AP called her win at 8:08 p.m., when she had 59.2% of the vote to Allen’s 40.8%.

Griswold said the attorney general’s office would continue to be used to challenge actions by Donald Trump’s administration. The same evening, Democrat John Hickenlooper won reelection to the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican Mark Baisley.
