JB Pritzker will remain governor of Illinois. In Tuesday’s midterm elections, 60% of Illinois voters backed Pritzker, while his Republican rival, Darren Bailey, received 37% of the vote. Christian Mitchell became the new lieutenant governor after Juliana Stratton won her race for the U.S. Senate.
Pritzker celebrated his victory with supporters who filled a ballroom at Navy Pier in Chicago. In his speech, he often spoke of hope for a better future. JB Pritzker was welcomed by the crowd with thunderous applause and cheers as he took the stage Tuesday evening with his wife, MK, and daughter Teddi.
He told the crowd that he loves Illinois and loves serving as governor. He said that today’s politicians fall into two categories: those who call for hope and those who want to stoke fear. He added that people should be afraid of certain politicians who hold enormous power. He did not mention President Donald Trump by name, but he appeared to be directing his remarks at him. “Be afraid of greed, be afraid of cruelty, be afraid of corruption, be afraid of bigotry, heartlessness and unchecked power,” Pritzker said.
He invoked the first and the most recent presidents from Illinois, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama. He also spoke about inspiring hope for the future. “We must save the American dream for the next generation,” the Democrat said. JB Pritzker has already made history by winning election to a third term as governor of Illinois. The last time that happened was more than 40 years ago. He said he is often asked what comes next. “The answer is simple. I will ask you to keep hoping, to surround yourselves with hope and courage,” Pritzker urged. He stressed that the work does not end with this victory. Pritzker told supporters that he believes in their ability to face the next challenges alongside him.
Darren Bailey met with disappointed supporters who gathered in Effingham in southern Illinois, hoping for an unexpected turn of events that never came.
