Poland’s Ambassador to the UN Asks to Cut Mission Short in Third Such Departure

Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski has asked to cut short his diplomatic mission to the United Nations, and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has granted the request. Szczerski will end his mission this month, Foreign Ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór announced Monday on X.

“Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski has asked the minister of foreign affairs to shorten his diplomatic mission to the UN. Minister Sikorski has granted that request. Ambassador Szczerski will end his mission later this month,” Wewiór wrote on X.

Marcin Przydacz, head of the International Policy Bureau in the Chancellery of the President (KPRP), responded on X. “Another Polish ambassador is resigning. This time it is Prof. K. Szczerski, Poland’s Permanent Representative to the UN. After the Polish ambassadors to China and Romania, he is the third high-ranking diplomat who does not want to lend his name to the lawlessness of Donald Tusk’s government. The context is obvious,” the presidential minister wrote.

The ambassadors to China and Romania, Jakub Kumoch and Paweł Soloch, had earlier submitted their resignations. Kumoch and Soloch said previously that their decision was a reaction to the situation surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal.

Szczerski was nominated in mid-June 2021 as Poland’s ambassador and head of its permanent mission to the UN in New York. Immediately before that nomination, he headed the International Policy Bureau in the chancellery of President Andrzej Duda.

Szczerski is a professor of social sciences and a lecturer at Jagiellonian University. He specializes in European politics, contemporary political systems and public administration. He served in the seventh term of the Sejm, Poland’s lower house of parliament, and has been a deputy foreign minister and deputy head of the Office of the Committee for European Integration. From 2015, he was a minister in the Chancellery of the President and head of the president’s cabinet, and in 2021 he became head of the presidential International Policy Bureau.
