Rubio: Trump Believes Poland Deserves a Seat at the G20
President Donald Trump believes Poland deserves a seat at the G20 table, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday. He praised Poland for its progress in the economy and in security. He expressed hope that Poland will also be invited to take part in the group’s work by its next presidency.
Speaking at a press conference on the second day of the G20 meeting in Atlanta, Rubio singled out the Polish delegation. “Poland as a country has made enormous progress in both the economic sphere and in security, because it puts its national interests and the well-being of its citizens first,” the head of American diplomacy said.
“Poland is stronger and more resilient as a state, and America, as Poland’s ally and partner, also becomes stronger because of it,” he added.
“President Trump is deeply convinced that Poland deserves a place at this table of world leaders,” Rubio added.
The United States holds the G20 presidency this year, and Poland is taking part as a full member at the special invitation of the U.S. At the Atlanta meeting, Poland is represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.
Rubio said the U.S. is “counting very much on Poland, as well as other strong, developing countries, being invited again next year” to take part in the G20’s work.
Poland has already been invited to take part in the group’s work by the United Kingdom and South Korea, which hold the G20 presidency in the next two years.
The meeting, which ends Saturday, is meant to prepare the ground for the group’s summit, scheduled for Dec. 14-15 in Florida. Poland is expected to be represented at that event by President Karol Nawrocki.
The U.S. has also invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the summit. Russia maintains that no decision has yet been made on whether he will attend.
