European Conservatives Group Condemns Tusk Government’s Actions Against Constitutional Tribunal

Nicola Procaccini and Patryk Jaki, co-chairs of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament, said in a published statement that they “condemned the actions of Tusk’s government against the Constitutional Tribunal in Poland as a violation of the rule of law.”

Jaki, of Law and Justice (PiS), and Procaccini, who represents the party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the European Parliament, “expressed support for President Karol Nawrocki in his defense of the constitutional order and warned European institutions against ignoring these developments.”

“The actions of Tusk’s government constitute a clear and serious violation of the rule of law. We condemn this attack on the independence of the judiciary and on Poland’s constitutional safeguards. No government stands above the law. We support President Nawrocki in defending Poland’s constitutional order. European institutions cannot look away from what is happening. Respect for national sovereignty and the independence of the judiciary must remain a matter of principle, regardless of political alliances,” Procaccini wrote.

Jaki said in the statement that “Tusk’s left-liberal government used the police to force its own people, who present themselves as judges, into the independent Constitutional Tribunal.”

“No one should remain indifferent to what is happening in Poland. Tusk wants to take control of the Constitutional Tribunal in order to remove an important mechanism for checking his government’s power. The European Union, which so often invokes the rule of law, is now silent while Poland’s constitutional order is under attack,” the Polish politician concluded.

The European Conservatives and Reformists group in the European Parliament includes, among others, Law and Justice (PiS), Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), the Czech Civic Democratic Party (ODS), the Romanian Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), the Sweden Democrats, the Finns Party and the Belgian New Flemish Alliance (N-VA).
