Hurricane Isaias caused nearly $582 million in insured losses in Florida. According to data from the state’s insurance regulation office, current as of Oct. 15, 46,509 claims have been filed for homes, businesses, vehicles and other losses.

The vast majority involve homes. Property owners filed more than 35,000 claims totaling $558.6 million. About 87% of residential claims remained open with no payment made. The most claims came from the three westernmost Panhandle counties: Santa Rosa (22,894), Escambia (13,677) and Okaloosa (4,334).

Isaias made landfall on Oct. 9 near Destin as a Category 2 hurricane. The damage was caused mainly by strong winds that snapped trees and tore down power lines and roofs. At least six people died in Florida.

The administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis has asked President Donald Trump for a disaster declaration and for about $237 million in support from FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The money would cover, among other things, debris removal and repairs to public infrastructure in 15 counties. Residents of eight counties, where preliminary findings show damage to nearly 1,000 homes, could apply for individual assistance. State emergency management officials note that estimating the losses could take several months.
