Six people were killed in a deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Orange County. The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the highway, near mile marker 252. A Chevrolet Traverse traveling in the inside lane struck a Road Ranger roadside assistance vehicle. Both vehicles left the roadway and caught fire.
The SUV’s driver and five passengers, who were trapped in the vehicle, died at the scene. Their identities have not yet been confirmed. The medical examiner’s office is handling the identifications and will pass the information to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the FHP, the Road Ranger vehicle had earlier been parked in a grassy strip with its warning lights on, assisting at another crash. The driver was then asked to help with a truck stopped on the right shoulder and was crossing the roadway when the collision occurred. The SUV’s left front struck the right rear of the roadside assistance vehicle.
Witnesses said the SUV was traveling at high speed and without its lights on. The Road Ranger driver remained at the scene and did not require hospitalization. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
