Illinois residents can apply for help paying their heating bills. Over the weekend, state officials increased the number of applications accepted under the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program.
The maximum gross household income over 30 days that qualifies for the program is $3,990 for a single person, $5,410 for a two-person household, $6,830 for a family of three, $8,250 for a family of four, $9,670 for a family of five and $11,090 for a family of six.
The state of Illinois has set aside $240 million for the program. Last year, more than 360,000 households received assistance, an average of $676 each. Since Oct. 1, priority in accepting applications has gone to seniors, people with disabilities, families with children age 5 or younger, and households whose electricity or gas has been shut off, that have received a shutoff notice, or whose propane tank level has fallen below 25%.
