U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged overnight Tuesday into Wednesday that the war with Iran was partly to blame for Republican losses in the congressional elections. He said he would accept the results and congratulated the Democrats. At the same time, he declared that he would veto their proposals.
– Iran was one of the factors, the president told The Wall Street Journal when asked about his party’s poor showing. He said, however, that he does not regret attacking Iran and would do it again.
Trump said he believes the rise in oil prices, rather than the war itself, is the biggest political burden on his administration. The conflict with Iran drove up the price of gasoline and diesel, which caused discontent among American voters.
The head of state did not challenge the congressional election results and said he hopes to work with the Democrats, but that he intends to use his “right to veto” if necessary.
– I think we’ll work with the Democrats and get along with them very well. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll be very tough on them, and they’ll be very tough on us, he added.
He did not answer a question about which Democrats in particular he would find it easy to work with.
On Fox News, he congratulated the Democrats and acknowledged that they had done a good job and had worked hard and long on it. He said he would accept the results of the vote.
He said he does not plan to make personnel changes in his administration. He expressed his belief that the results of the congressional elections do not show that Americans are dissatisfied with his presidency.
– I don’t take this as a blow aimed at me, Trump said. – We have the best two years of any presidency when it comes to the economy and all the actions we have taken, he added.
