J.B. Pritzker, who won a third term as Illinois governor on Tuesday, unveiled an ambitious agenda for the U.S. Congress just one day after the election. The document contains 200 proposals on domestic and foreign policy. Its release has again sparked speculation that the politician is preparing to run for president in 2028.
Pritzker Presents a 200-Point Plan for Congress
At a gathering with voters in Columbus Park in Chicago, Pritzker presented a program titled “The Fight for Illinois.” Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, who won a U.S. Senate seat in Tuesday’s election, also took part in the event.
The document runs 75 pages and contains 200 recommendations for the new Congress. The governor wants lawmakers to address, among other things, reversing decisions made by Donald Trump’s administration, restoring federal programs and investments, and refunding money collected through tariffs.
The proposals cover a wide range of topics, from the war in Iran and immigration policy to artificial intelligence regulation and the online sports betting market. Pritzker described the document as a practical action plan rather than merely a collection of general demands.
Will the Illinois Governor Run in 2028?
Pritzker is mentioned among potential Democratic candidates in the 2028 presidential election. The presentation of a program aimed at Congress only fueled that speculation. Some of the solutions the governor had already introduced earlier at the state level.
During Wednesday’s appearance, however, he announced no decisions about his own presidential ambitions. He also did not say when he might settle the question. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, meanwhile, said she would back Pritzker if he decides to seek the Democratic nomination.
The governor thanked those who see him as a potential presidential candidate for their confidence, but he did not confirm that he intends to enter the race.
Third Term and a Political Clash With the Texas Governor
In Tuesday’s election, Pritzker defeated Republican Darren Bailey. He thus became the first Democrat in Illinois history elected to a third term as governor.
At Wednesday’s gathering, he also referred to the defeat of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. In 2022, Abbott sent thousands of migrants and asylum seekers to Illinois, criticizing the state’s immigration policy. Pritzker made no secret of his satisfaction with the result of Tuesday’s vote in Texas.
