President Donald Trump has endorsed several Illinois Republicans running in the midterm elections. One significant name was missing from the list, however.
Among those who gained Trump’s support is former state Sen. Darren Bailey, who is again challenging Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker. Bailey already tried to unseat Pritzker in 2022. Four years ago, Trump also endorsed Bailey, traveling to Illinois in person for a campaign rally. Pritzker ultimately won the 2022 race, with a margin of more than 500,000 votes.
The U.S. president had already declared his support for Bailey earlier this year in an interview with the media. Last weekend, in a post on X, he again expressed his backing for Bailey, as well as for Illinois members of the House of Representatives Mike Bost, Mary Miller and Darin LaHood. “These great patriots have my Complete and Total Endorsement. They will never let you down,” Trump said. Bailey responded to the post with a brief thank-you.
One significant name was missing from the list, however: Trump did not mention Don Tracy, the former chair of the Illinois Republican Party, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Dick Durbin. Tracy is competing against Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton. According to Capitol News Illinois, Tracy said this summer at the State Fair that he “would certainly accept the endorsement of the president of the United States,” although he noted that he is not actively seeking that support. In this race, Tracy is considered a clear underdog.
It is worth noting that since former Gov. Bruce Rauner’s victory in 2014, no Illinois Republican has managed to win an election for that office.
