Phoenix could have its first rainy Halloween in nearly 40 years. Forecasters are predicting several days of rain.
According to the National Weather Service, the last time it rained in Phoenix on Halloween was in 1987. This year, an “atmospheric river,” a band of very moist air, is moving toward Arizona and Southern California. A strong El Niño is fueling the October storms.
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be sunny, at about 86°F. On Friday, the chance of rain is 80%, thunderstorms are possible, and the temperature will drop to 77°F. On Saturday, Halloween, the chance of precipitation is 30% during the day and 50% at night. Downpours are possible again on Sunday.
“It could rain for several days, so it looks like an unsettled weekend,” said NWS meteorologist Gabriel Lojero.
