Police Union Head Tells Chief Commander: President Forced to Push Through Police Cordon Is a Scandal

The head of one of the labor unions operating within the police, “Police Solidarity,” has written a letter to Police Chief Commander Marek Boroń following the events outside the Constitutional Tribunal.

The leader of the union, which was founded in 2024 and is affiliated with the OPZZ (All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions), is demanding a public statement from Gen. Boroń explaining where the police stand after Friday’s events.

“The officers sent to serve in the capital city of Warsaw are in large part young officers going through professional adaptation after completing basic training, and they do not have the necessary experience in securing this type of event,” said Jacek Łukasik, chairman of the National Council of the “Police Solidarity” union.

He pointed out that officers from various garrisons are signaling legal doubts about actions taken by the police on the grounds of the Constitutional Tribunal, including possible interference in the work of a constitutional organ of the state and a violation of the law.

“These doubts are confirmed by reports that members of parliament were refused entry to the Constitutional Tribunal grounds, as well as by the scandalous situation involving the President of Poland, who was forced to push his way through a police cordon and was thus deprived of proper protection by the State Protection Service. These actions have given rise to justified concerns in the police community about whether they comply with the law,” Łukasik explained.

He said the union is receiving numerous questions from the families of police officers who are worried about the health and lives of their husbands, wives, sons and daughters serving as officers, “who are aware that they have been left alone to face accusations of committing crimes in connection with carrying out orders from their superiors – commanders.”

In the chairman’s assessment, “the current situation has significantly lowered morale among police officers, which may result in various forms of discontent being expressed by officers left to fend for themselves.” “Trying to motivate them to serve solely by invoking ‘procedures and regulations’ may end as it did in 2018 and 2021, exposing the state to a significant drop in the level of internal security,” he wrote.

“In our assessment, the political class has brought about a situation that should never have occurred. Unfortunately, those responsible for the current state of affairs are ignoring the fact that when political disputes subside, the police will still be carrying out their everyday mission: ‘We Help and Protect,'” Łukasik stressed.

He added that “no police officer, male or female, wants to become a piece in political games.” “Each of us wants to carry out our service in line with the idea that inspired us to join the force, which is to serve society and to have the support of our superiors,” he said, appealing to the chief commander to take a position on the matter.
