Patty Garcia Wins Illinois House Seat, Succeeding Jesus “Chuy” Garcia

Must read

Patty Garcia has won the race for Illinois’ 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. According to the Associated Press, she defeated three rivals and will take over the seat from her former boss, Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.

The new congresswoman is not related to her predecessor. She worked in his office for years, and later became his chief of staff. Her victory ends the long political career of Chuy Garcia, who decided not to seek another term.

Patty Garcia Wins in Illinois’ 4th District

The 4th Congressional District covers part of southwest Chicago and numerous suburbs. Its boundaries stretch from Northlake and Franklin Park in the north, through Oak Brook, Berwyn and Cicero, to Burbank in the south.

The campaign was controversial. Patty Garcia faced criticism over the circumstances in which she obtained the Democratic Party nomination. Chuy Garcia announced his decision not to run relatively late, which left Patty Garcia as the only Democrat on the ballot in the March primary.

That drew objections from some political circles and encouraged independent candidates to try to compete for the seat. In the end, Garcia defeated Republican candidate Lupe Castillo, Ed Hershey of the Working Class Party, and Chris Getty, the mayor of Lyons, who ran as an independent.

Two other people, Chicago alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez and Mayra Macias, also tried to qualify to run as independent candidates. Their candidacies were not approved after the petitions they submitted were challenged.

Who Is Patty Garcia, and What Are Her Views?

Patty Garcia has long experience in political and administrative work. She headed Chuy Garcia’s district office and later became his chief of staff. She also earned a doctorate in education policy from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Her work has dealt with issues including transportation, infrastructure and education.

During the campaign, she presented a progressive platform. She advocated raising the federal minimum wage, expanding union rights and creating a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. She also supported abolishing ICE and introducing a universal health insurance system, Medicare for All.

Her other proposals included campaign finance reform and halting U.S. military aid to Israel. She has described the actions of the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip as genocide.

End of Chuy Garcia’s Career of More Than 40 Years

Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s departure from Congress marks the end of more than four decades in politics. He cited health problems and the need to care for his ill wife and grandson as the reasons for not seeking another term.

During his career, he served on the Chicago City Council, the Cook County Board and the Illinois State Senate, among other posts. He also supported Harold Washington, Chicago’s first Black mayor.

He ran for mayor twice himself. He came closest to winning in 2015, when he forced a runoff with the then-incumbent, Rahm Emanuel.

Patty Garcia’s victory should not fundamentally change the balance of power in Congress, because the 4th District is traditionally dominated by Democratic voters. The new congresswoman is expected to begin work in Washington after the swearing-in of the new members of the House of Representatives, scheduled for January 3.
