Donna Miller Wins Illinois’ 2nd District, Will Succeed Robin Kelly in Congress

Must read

Donna Miller has won the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District. According to CBS News projections, she defeated Republican candidate Mike Noack. Miller, who has served as a Cook County commissioner, will succeed Robin Kelly, who is leaving the seat after an unsuccessful bid for a U.S. Senate seat.

The new congresswoman is a longtime political ally of Kelly. In the Democratic primary in March, she defeated nine other candidates to win the nomination for the general election.

Donna Miller Will Replace Robin Kelly in Congress

Robin Kelly has represented Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District since 2013. She decided to give up the seat to run for the Democratic nomination in the election for the U.S. Senate. She wanted to replace longtime Sen. Dick Durbin, but lost the primary to Juliana Stratton.

Her successor, Donna Miller, has experience in local government. As a Cook County commissioner, she represents several of Chicago’s southern suburbs. Her district includes Alsip, Bridgeview, Chicago Heights, Crestwood, Matteson, Oak Forest, Orland Park, Park Forest, Sauk Village, Steger, Tinley Park and Worth.

Miller’s Republican opponent, Mike Noack, is a truck driver from Kankakee County. This year’s election was his first attempt to win public office.

Illinois’ 2nd District Has Voted Democratic for Decades

Miller’s victory was not a big surprise. The 2nd Congressional District is one of the most stable Democratic strongholds in Illinois. A Republican has not won a congressional seat there since the 1950s.

The district covers a vast area of southern Illinois. It stretches from Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, through the southern suburbs, to farmland near Danville in the central part of the state.

The new congresswoman will take over Robin Kelly’s duties and will represent residents of the region in the federal House of Representatives. Her victory means the Democrats keep the seat.
