Korwin-Piotrowska Calls Nov. 3 Meeting of Constitutional Tribunal Judges

Anna Korwin-Piotrowska said she has issued an order convening a general assembly of judges of the Constitutional Tribunal (TK) for Tuesday, Nov. 3, among other things to adopt the Tribunal’s 2027 budget. She appealed to politicians, including President Karol Nawrocki, “to tone down this escalation.”

In an interview with TVP Info on Friday evening, Korwin-Piotrowska, who is currently at the Tribunal’s headquarters, said that “by not allowing judges to adjudicate, Bogdan Święczkowski made it impossible to adopt the draft revenue and expenditure plan of the Constitutional Tribunal for 2027.”

She added that, because work on the budget bill is under way in parliament, “this is the last moment when it is still possible to convene the general assembly of judges of the Constitutional Tribunal and adopt the budget.”

She said she has already issued the order convening the general assembly of judges for Tuesday, Nov. 3. She said all the judges would be notified “without delay.”

Asked how to convince the other side of the political spectrum that the actions being taken at the TK are lawful, Korwin-Piotrowska said that “we have a state of higher constitutional necessity.”

“A democratic state cannot function in modern Europe without a constitutional court, which (…) is the guarantor of civil rights and freedoms,” she said, noting that cases pending since 2013 are still waiting to be heard at the TK. “We will restore the Tribunal to citizens,” she added.

She appealed to all politicians, including President Karol Nawrocki, “to tone down this escalation and not to call, as we have heard, for mobilizing the forces of the nation, because solutions by force are a disaster for building a society and for understanding.”

Asked about the president cutting short his trip to Senegal and returning to Poland, she said that if President Karol Nawrocki invites to the Presidential Palace the five TK judges from whom he has not yet taken the oath of office, they will go “without a moment’s hesitation.”
