King Tides Flood South Florida Coast

Must read

Exceptionally high autumn tides, known as “king tides,” flooded streets along South Florida’s coast over the weekend. On Sunday morning, water stood on Franklin Street and Ocean Drive in Hollywood, among other places, where residents said it reached knee-deep in spots and poured into businesses.

Flooding was also reported in Miami (near NE 79th Street and North Bayshore Drive), in Miami Beach, in Fort Lauderdale and at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, the risk of serious coastal flooding is rising from Monday morning through Tuesday. Florida’s emergency management agency is warning of strong winds, waves of 10 to 15 feet and dangerous rip currents.

Officials advise moving cars to higher ground, securing property and avoiding beaches, especially at high tide.
