Denver is doing away with paper parking permits for residents. Over the next year, an online system will replace them. Some residents are not happy about it.
The change affects, among other things, “flex” passes, which let residents give a parking space to themselves or to a guest. Now, guest details will have to be entered in advance on a web portal: the date of arrival, length of stay, license plate number and the make of the car. Physical passes will eventually stop being valid.
Resident Chris Razzazian is concerned about privacy. “It’s more than I would like to put into a database: who is in my home and for how long,” he says. In his view, the new system will also make it harder for other members of the household to use the pass.
The city responds that once a car is removed from a permit, its data will not be stored. After residents raised concerns, the vehicle information required was also cut from four items to two. “We want it to be more convenient, flexible and simple,” says Nancy Kuhn of the city’s transportation department.
