St. Petersburg Mayor Poll: Crist Leads Welch 55% to 35%

The final St. Pete Polls survey before the St. Petersburg mayoral election gives Charlie Crist 55% support and incumbent Mayor Ken Welch 35%. The poll for Florida Politics was conducted Thursday and Friday.

The result covers all likely voters, including undecided respondents who said which way they lean. Six in 10 respondents (61%) said they had already voted in the mayoral race.

Among those who have already voted, Crist has 59% and Welch 38%, while 3% declined to reveal their choice. Among voters who still plan to vote (39%), 49% back Crist, 29% back Welch and 22% are undecided.

The poll also shows Crist leading among Democratic voters, 49% to 45%. A week earlier, the two were tied in that group. Among Black voters, Crist has 46% and Welch 43%. In March, Welch led in that group 55% to 16%.

This is the fourth and final St. Pete Polls survey in this race since the primary. Crist has led in all of the firm’s polls since March, when the result was 36% to 31%. Welch has not reached 35% in any head-to-head matchup this year. The analysis excluded respondents who said they do not plan to vote in the mayoral race.

An earlier poll in October gave Crist a 21-point lead. The same ballot includes a referendum on municipal bonds of up to $600 million. Welch supports it, and Crist opposes it. Florida Politics notes that Michelle Todd Schorsch, chair of the St. Pete Shines committee supporting Crist, is connected to his campaign.
