The New York City Police Department has seized 4,500 illegal firearms since the start of 2026, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Thursday. According to police data, the number of people shot in the city during that period was 100 lower than in the same period last year. “That’s 4,500 firearms that can no longer be used against residents,” Tisch said.
The commissioner presented the results at a news conference attended by the New York State attorney general and two district attorneys. Officers displayed seized handguns, shotguns and rifles, recovered both through long-term investigations and during routine patrols. The NYPD makes about 4,000 arrests a year for firearms offenses, officials said.
Tisch pointed to the dangers posed by various types of illegal weapons, including hard-to-identify “ghost guns” and assault weapons.
“Every shooting is one too many. We will not stop fighting the plague of gun violence,” the commissioner said. She also stressed the importance of cooperation among police, local communities and institutions in reducing gun crime.
