Texas’ Polish community is gearing up for one of the fall’s most important cultural events. The 27th Houston Polish Film Festival (Polski Festiwal Filmowy w Houston) opens with a gala on Thursday, Oct. 29.
The gala begins at 6 p.m. in Cullen Hall on the campus of the University of St. Thomas (4001 Mt. Vernon St.). The program includes a concert by pianist Andrew Schneider and violinist Anna Czerniak featuring works by Grażyna Bacewicz and Schubert, as well as film music by Wojciech Kilar. It also features a screening of the documentary “Wajda, A Man from Gdańsk” and a reception. Tickets cost $80, and evening attire is required.
Screenings are scheduled from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 at the Regal Edwards Houston Marq’E theater (7600 Katy Freeway). Audiences will see, among others, “Ministranci” by Piotr Domalewski, “Dobry chłopiec” by Jan Komasa, “Przez ścianę” by Maciej Sobieszczański, “Syrenka Picassa” by Janusz Zaorski, “Cudze rzeczy” by Grzegorz Dębowski and “Pojedynek” by Łukasz Palkowski. The festival closes on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 4 p.m. with “Lalka,” directed by Maciej Kawalski and starring Marcin Dorociński and Kamila Urzędowska (tickets $30).
All films will be shown with English subtitles, making it a good opportunity to bring American friends along. Organizers note that the list of films may still change. Details are published on the Forum Polonia Houston website.
