Officials at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, announced that additional seat belts have been installed on one of the park’s most popular roller coasters. The decision followed a fatal accident at Six Flags Over Georgia, where a man fell from a car on a similar ride in early October and died.
Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, of Atlanta, died Oct. 12 after falling from his seat on the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia. In a statement issued last Friday, Six Flags President and CEO John Reilly said the company is “strengthening safety measures at its parks and taking additional steps, including installing seat belts on the Goliath roller coaster and other roller coasters equipped with a similar restraint system.”
One such ride is Raging Bull at Great America in Gurnee. The ride has remained closed since the incident at Six Flags Over Georgia. Raging Bull was designed by the same manufacturer as Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia, Bolliger & Mabillard.
Great America in Gurnee also has a roller coaster named Goliath, but it was designed by a different manufacturer and is not similar to either Raging Bull or the Goliath mentioned above. Six Flags officials confirmed that seat belts will be installed on Raging Bull in addition to its existing restraints. The company also said seat belts will be added to the Nitro roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey.
