Chicago Devotes Millions to Fighting Violence as Mayor, Council Members Seek Ways to Make City Safer

Mayor Brandon Johnson and leaders of Chicago community organizations are focusing on the city’s strategy for reducing gun violence. A meeting held Saturday was part of a larger event organized on the South Side by the social justice initiative Live Free Illinois.

City Council members were invited to present their positions on creating a permanent city department tasked with reducing gun violence in Chicago. Supporters of the idea say a specialized department would allow for better coordination of violence prevention efforts and increase accountability for the steps taken.

“Building safe communities requires partnership. We need faith leaders who bring hope and have a unique bond with our residents. We need violence prevention workers and interventionists who are present in our communities and reach the people most at risk,” Johnson said.

Currently, Chicago spends about $150 million on efforts to reduce gun violence, divided among various city departments.
