U.S. News & World Report this week published its new ranking of the best elementary schools in each state for 2027. The top 25 in Illinois include public schools (serving kindergarten through eighth grade) from Chicago and its suburbs.
More than 70,000 public elementary schools across the country were evaluated, based on district- and state-level results. According to the report, the final ranking was built on four equally weighted criteria, each making up 25% of the score: math proficiency, math performance, reading proficiency and reading performance. In first place in the ranking of Illinois elementary schools was a school in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system: Edison Elementary Regional Gifted Center, located at 4929 N. Sawyer Ave. in the Albany Park neighborhood. To get into this magnet school (one offering a specialized curriculum), students must pass an entrance exam. The school serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade. According to the report, about 265 students attend, with an average of 13 students per teacher. Second place in Illinois went to another CPS school, Skinner North Elementary School, in Chicago’s Near North Side area. Third place went to Thurgood Marshall Elementary in Rockford.
