At least 12 people, including six children, were wounded in a shooting near the Florida A&M University (FAMU) stadium in Tallahassee. The shots were fired Saturday evening, after a football game during homecoming weekend. The shooter has not been apprehended.
The shots rang out Saturday, Oct. 24, at about 8 p.m. Eastern time (7 p.m. in Chicago) on Perry Street, near the FAMU stadium. The area was very crowded after the game. According to police’s preliminary findings, a fight broke out just before the shooting.
Eleven people were shot. At least three have serious injuries. By Sunday morning, five people had already been discharged from the hospital and six were still being treated, one of them in critical condition. No one was killed.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said no one had yet been arrested, and he declined to speculate about exactly what happened. He acknowledged that the children’s injuries are especially painful. The crowd made it difficult to reach the scene, so officers carried the wounded to ambulances themselves.
The university said the shooting took place near the campus and that the campus itself is safe. The investigation is ongoing.
