Chicago Cab Rides Get Pricier With Fuel Surcharge

Must read

Taxi drivers in Chicago can add a fuel surcharge to fares because the price of gasoline remains above $5 a gallon. City officials said the surcharge took effect Wednesday.

Under a decision by the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, the surcharge applies only when both the current average price of regular gasoline in the Chicago area (according to AAA data) and the average price a month earlier are at least $5 a gallon.

City officials remind taxi drivers that they are required to post a notice about the surcharge in their vehicles, in a place visible to passengers, next to the list of fares. The surcharge is $1 for trips costing $20 or less, $2 for trips from $20.01 to $40, and $3 for trips above $40.01. The surcharge is calculated on the fare before taxes, tolls or other additional costs are added.

When fuel prices fall, the surcharge will be suspended. The last time a fuel surcharge was in effect in Chicago was from June 1 to June 23.
