Chicago taxi passengers should expect higher bills. The city has allowed drivers to add a special fuel surcharge to fares. The move is a response to high gasoline prices.
The decision was made by the city’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP). The amount of the surcharge depends on the fare, calculated before taxes, tolls and other extras:
- $1 for fares up to $20,
- $2 for fares from $20.01 to $40,
- $3 for fares above $40.
The surcharge may be collected when the average price of regular gasoline in the Chicago area, according to AAA, is at least $5 per gallon, both currently and a month earlier.
A taxi driver who adds the fuel surcharge must display a notice about it in the vehicle, visible to passengers.
