Pritzker: Democrats Created Key Social Programs, Republicans Are Trying to Dismantle Them

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is defending his Democratic Party’s record on health care and civil rights. He stresses that Democrats created key social programs, while accusing Republicans of seeking to dismantle protections Americans are entitled to.

This week, JB Pritzker, who is seeking a third term in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, laid out his position in a post on X, sharing a video in which he explained why he joined the Democrats and contrasted the two parties’ approaches to health care and civil rights. “It was Democrats who created Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid,” Pritzker wrote. He added: “We are the party that fought for voting rights and civil rights. Republicans want to destroy all of it.”

In the video, Pritzker said he joined the party because Democrats supported access to health care and helped create key federal social benefit programs. “We are the party that believes everyone deserves health care,” he said. Pritzker also noted that Democrats have historically stood guard over voting and civil rights. “We are the ones trying to protect those rights. The other side is trying to destroy them,” he said.

In August, Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California cited a Yale University analysis that projected Medicare for All could save $1.04 trillion a year and prevent 114,174 deaths. The study has not yet been peer reviewed. In June, The Kobeissi Letter warned that health care costs per employee are expected to rise 6.7% by the end of 2026, to at least $18,500, increasing pressure on workers and employers.

Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban called for greater transparency in contracts between insurers and hospitals to keep insurance companies from holding on to savings. He proposed publicly disclosing the contracts and imposing fines of $1 million a day for failing to comply with the rules.

In July, five civil rights organizations sued the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, seeking records related to the administration of President Donald Trump’s attempt to block more than $10 billion earmarked for child care and support for families.
