Students at West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines were evacuated Thursday morning after a report of an underground gas leak. It is the latest such incident at the school in the past month.
According to Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue, crews were called to the school at 500 NW 209th Ave. after a report of a leak underground. Firefighters were handling the situation and awaiting confirmation from a hazardous materials team. Authorities said there was no immediate danger at the time.
A message the school sent to parents said all students and staff were safely evacuated to designated areas, as in a fire drill. One parent showed the message to Local 10.
Thursday’s evacuation is the latest in recent weeks. The school was previously evacuated on Oct. 5 because of an underground gas leak. At that time, one of the buildings was evacuated and students were sent home early. A school district spokeswoman said then that the source of the leak had been identified and the gas had been shut off until repairs could be made. Pembroke Pines police said county workers would come to the scene to carry out the repairs.
Local 10 also reports that another leak was reported at the school on the Thursday a week earlier. A student’s parent told the station that there had been four evacuations in a month “because of the same gas leak.” Authorities did not immediately confirm whether all of the incidents were connected.
The cause of the earlier leak has not yet been given. There is no information about anyone being injured in Thursday’s incident.
