California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday he has commuted all 548 death sentences in the state to life in prison without parole, calling the death penalty morally unacceptable. The Democrat is nearing the end of his term and may run for president in 2028.
Florida is set to execute 64-year-old Jesse Guardado on Thursday evening for the 2004 murder and robbery of 75-year-old Jackie Malone. It will be the state's 19th execution this year, tying last year's record.
