Angel Carrasco, 31, of New York City has been charged with the murder of his former partner, 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez, and the attempted murder of their 8-month-old daughter. According to prosecutors, the man pushed the woman and the baby from the balcony of a 15th-floor apartment in the Bronx. The mother died, and the girl suffered life-threatening injuries.

The tragedy occurred on Oct. 6, shortly after 3:30 a.m., in Ramirez’s apartment. Investigators determined that Carrasco allegedly caused the woman and the infant to fall from the balcony.

According to information released by the U.S. Marshals Service, witnesses heard the mother begging the suspect to stop, after which her body plunged to the ground. New York City police officers found both victims in front of the building with injuries consistent with a fall from a great height. Paramedics took them to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where the 23-year-old was pronounced dead. Her daughter, who is in critical condition, remains under doctors’ care.

According to investigators, Ramirez was holding the baby in her arms when she fell, which may have partially cushioned the impact and saved the infant’s life.

Carrasco was apprehended the day after the incident in a joint operation by the U.S. Marshals Service and the New York City Police Department. On Wednesday, the 31-year-old was formally arraigned in New York State Supreme Court in the Bronx. He faces several charges, including second-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. The defendant is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. Judge Alvin Yearwood ordered him held in custody and barred him from contacting his daughter.

Media reports say there had been two earlier interventions involving domestic violence against Carrasco.
