The situation at the Constitutional Tribunal is a clear consequence of years of conflict between the Civic Coalition (KO) and Law and Justice (PiS), Razem spokesman Mateusz Merta told PAP. He added that the result of the dispute is that the Tribunal’s authority lies in ruins. In his view, the only solution is a constitutional reset.
“From the perspective of the Razem party, the current situation at the Constitutional Tribunal is a clear consequence of years of conflict between (Civic Platform – PAP) and PiS,” Razem spokesman Mateusz Merta told PAP.
Merta noted that the dispute over the Tribunal has lasted 11 years. “First, Platforma elected judges in advance, then PiS installed members of its own party there, and today Donald Tusk’s government has installed its trusted people there and is operating in an area of deep legal fiction,” the Razem spokesman said.
In Merta’s assessment, “the result is that the authority of the Constitutional Tribunal lies in ruins,” and “it looks like both sides of the political polarization simply benefit from it.”
“Razem believes that we must urgently carry out a constitutional reset,” the party spokesman said. He added that the entire current membership of the Constitutional Tribunal, “which no side of the political scene fully recognizes,” should be dismissed, and a new panel should be appointed by a broad, cross-party constitutional majority of three-fifths of the votes.
“This is the only way to heal the situation at the Tribunal and to avoid deepening this situation, which is dangerous for the stability of the state,” Merta concluded.
On Friday afternoon, the Capital City Police Headquarters (KSP) said that police officers were carrying out statutory activities on the grounds of the Constitutional Tribunal’s headquarters, but were not inside the Tribunal’s building. A protest is under way in front of the Tribunal’s headquarters. Meanwhile, the Tribunal’s website posted a notice about an order for a break in official duties for President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice President Bartłomiej Sochański. (PAP)
