DeSantis for President? Governor Responds to Washington Post Report

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is considering another run for president in 2028, The Washington Post reported Friday, citing three people familiar with the politician’s plans. According to the newspaper, the Republican was said to have begun preliminary discussions about a possible campaign after this year’s midterm elections. DeSantis firmly denied the reports, accusing the paper of publishing false information based on anonymous sources.

The Washington Post reported that DeSantis had contacted at least one national political consultant about possibly working together on a presidential campaign. The information was provided by a person in his circle who requested anonymity. The newspaper also noted that a federal super PAC linked to the governor sent out text messages this week asking for donations. After the article was published, DeSantis posted on X, denying that he was making any preparations.

“The Washington Post made this up (…). I have not contacted anyone about running for anything. This is another pathetic attempt to get clicks. Using anonymous sources, of course!” he wrote. The newspaper later updated its article to include his statement.

The reports came after the midterm elections, in which Democrats scored a decisive victory, though, as the newspaper emphasizes, not in the Sunshine State.

At a press conference after the preliminary results were announced, he described the outcome of the vote as “close to the annihilation of Republicans.”

“It’s the political equivalent of a meteor strike that went through the entire United States – blue states, red states and everything in between,” he said.

DeSantis has already sought the Republican presidential nomination, in 2024. He ended his campaign before the New Hampshire primary, after finishing second in the Iowa vote, where he won 21.3% support. Donald Trump received more than 50% of the vote there. DeSantis’ current term as Florida governor ends in January 2027. So far, the politician has not presented any official plans for his future career, and reports of a possible run for president in 2028 remain unconfirmed.
