‘Once in a Century’: Central Florida Battles Aftermath of Historic Rainfall

Must read

Central Florida is dealing with the aftermath of intense rainfall that has caused widespread flooding since Sunday. The situation has been most difficult in Brevard County, where more than 23 inches of rain fell in places. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the amount of rain in some areas was equivalent to an event with a statistical probability of occurring once every 100 years.

The prolonged downpours were caused by a combination of a disturbance in the upper atmosphere and persistent easterly winds that kept bringing new bands of heavy rain over the region, according to NWS Melbourne. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Grant-Valkaria, where as much as 23.69 inches fell. In nearby Malabar, the total was 23.44 inches, and in Palm Bay, 19.75 inches. Significant rainfall was also recorded in Melbourne Beach, with 13.88 inches, and in Melbourne, with 13.11 inches.

Other parts of Brevard County also recorded exceptionally high totals. Palm Shores received 12.03 inches of rain, Titusville 11.61 inches, and Floridana Beach 11.43 inches. More than 10 inches were also recorded in Lagrange, Camp Holly Fish Camp and Melbourne Village. At Kennedy Space Center, the rainfall total was 9.74 inches, while at Port Canaveral it was 6.83 inches. Heavy rain also fell in neighboring counties, though the effects were not as widespread as in Brevard.

Meteorologists warn that although floodwaters should gradually recede, flooded roads and areas around buildings may still pose a danger. Residents have been advised to stay home if travel is not necessary. Drivers in flooded neighborhoods should slow down so they do not create waves that could push water into homes and businesses. The NWS also reminds people not to walk or drive through flooded sections of road, and not to let children near flooded ditches and waterways, where the depth and current may be greater and stronger than they appear at first glance.
