More than half of Americans believe inflation will spoil their holidays this year, according to a survey published by WalletHub. John Kiernan, the website’s editor in chief, commented on the findings.
“We found that more than half, or about 52% of Americans, think inflation will ruin Christmas or other holidays they celebrate,” Kiernan said. The survey also found that 79% of respondents have a holiday budget that is the same as last year’s or smaller. One in four respondents says they are still paying off debt from the previous holiday season. That is one reason starting holiday shopping early can seem appealing.
Kiernan said 41% of people usually begin shopping in October or even earlier, and added that it is not too late for those who have not yet started. “So we found that 41% of people say they usually start their holiday shopping in October or even earlier. If you haven’t started shopping yet, that’s no big deal. There are still plenty of opportunities to save money. And that is the main goal of people who start shopping early rather than at the last minute. More than two-thirds of people believe that shopping early for the holidays helps them save money overall,” Kiernan said.
Most of those surveyed say they have a holiday budget. Kiernan stressed that it is important to plan ahead, take time to look for deals and stick to what you can afford. The WalletHub survey also found that 56% of people do not trust artificial intelligence to help with holiday shopping.
