Abbott Leads Hinojosa in One of Last Texas Polls Before Election

Must read

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott received 50 percent support in the latest poll ahead of the gubernatorial election, while his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa, got 47 percent, according to a survey conducted by Texas Southern University. The incumbent’s lead has narrowed to three percentage points. Abbott is seeking a historic fourth term as governor of the state.

Among all respondents, 40 percent identified with the Republican Party, 31 percent with the Democratic Party and 24 percent described themselves as independent voters. Another 4 percent named other parties, while 1 percent did not state a party preference.

The results point to clear differences in preferences among voter groups. Most white respondents back the incumbent governor, while Hinojosa draws greater support among Hispanic and Black voters. Abbott also leads among men, while women are more likely to choose his Democratic rival. The divide shows up across age groups as well: younger voters are more likely to support Hinojosa, while older voters are far more likely to favor Abbott.

Early voting is already under way in Texas and ends Friday. On Election Day, Tuesday, polling places will open at 7:00 a.m.

The survey was conducted by the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center at Texas Southern University from Oct. 21 to 25 among 2,000 likely voters. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.19 percent.
