Police at Constitutional Tribunal as Kaczyński Decries “Attack”; President Cuts Short Flight to Senegal
Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński, speaking outside the Constitutional Tribunal, where police are taking action, appealed to President Karol Nawrocki to do everything within his powers to stop “this state of affairs that continues today and is moving forward.”
Police appeared on the grounds of the Constitutional Tribunal, Poland’s top constitutional court, on Friday afternoon. At the same time, a notice was posted on the Tribunal’s website about an order for a break in the official duties of Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice President Bartłomiej Sochański.
Kaczyński, who came to the Tribunal, appealed to the president to “do everything within his powers to stop this state of affairs that continues today and is moving forward.”
The president, who was on his way to Senegal, stressed in a post on X that “at such a moment the president must be in Poland” and announced that he was cutting short his flight and returning to the country.
Earlier on X, Kaczyński said that “this is the first such case on a global scale.” “An attack on the Constitutional Tribunal. Tusk’s services are entering the Tribunal by force,” the PiS leader wrote.
“From today, Poland is becoming a police state, and from there it is a short road to authoritarianism, and then to totalitarianism. The recommendations of the German Bachmann are being carried out. We Poles cannot let ourselves be intimidated! The civic protest, completely legal, must continue! The Tribunal is the guarantor of our freedom and sovereignty! Tusk’s trampling of the law knows no bounds!” Kaczyński wrote in his post. (PAP)
