The Zamość City Council, at its session Monday, Oct. 26, adopted a resolution supporting the Lublin Voivodeship Sejmik’s decision to break off cooperation with the Lviv Oblast. The Sejmik is the region’s elected assembly. Council members voted unanimously.
The dispute concerns a decision by the Lviv Oblast Council, which declared next year the year of the UPA, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, and its commander, Roman Shukhevych.
The initiative came from City Council Chairman Piotr Błażewicz. He stressed that the oblast authorities had time to reverse their decision but did not do so.
The chairman described the Lviv council members’ resolution as a slap in the face to Poles who had helped Ukrainians for years. He recalled that residents of Zamość turned out in large numbers a few years ago to support women and children fleeing the war.
Earlier, on Oct. 24, lawmakers from the Lublin region had also condemned the Ukrainian side’s decision.
