Irene Miller, 50, of Kissimmee, Florida, was arrested Friday after returning by plane from Las Vegas. According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the woman left four children, ages 9 to 14, with no supervision while she was away. The case came to light when the youngest son suffered a head injury and emergency services had to be called.
The incident occurred on October 21, when a 911 dispatcher received a report just after 8:30 p.m. about an injured 9-year-old. A dumbbell had fallen on the boy’s head. Officers who responded to the address found four children, ages 14, 12, 11 and 9, at the home. No adult was with them. The youngest child was taken to a nearby hospital, where he received medical care.
Investigators contacted the children’s mother, who said she was in Las Vegas for work and planned to return on October 23, two days later. The investigation determined that Miller had actually left on October 18.
The woman told officers she had hired a nanny, who commuted to her home from Tampa, to help the children get ready for school in the morning and to check on them “on an ongoing basis” after they came home from class. No one supervised the children overnight.
After establishing the circumstances of the incident, officers contacted the children’s father, who took them to his home. Detectives with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) then planned to arrest Miller on her return from Nevada. She was taken into custody Friday, right after getting off the plane.
Miller was charged with four counts of child neglect without causing great bodily harm. After her arrest, she was taken to the Orange County jail.
