Michael Oneal Fleming, 33, who is charged with shooting a Seattle gas station worker to death and is suspected of killing his own mother and stepfather in Kenosha, has been arrested in Chicago. The manhunt lasted a week and stretched across three states.
Fleming was arrested on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at around 5 p.m. on a Chicago street. According to Kenosha police, the federal U.S. Marshals Service assisted in the manhunt.
The first killing took place on Oct. 13 in Seattle, at a 76 gas station on Broad Street, a few steps from the famous Space Needle tower. Investigators determined that the man bought a drink, went behind the counter and shot the station manager several times. The victim died at the scene. Police stress that it was not a robbery. Fleming worked for about four years at a station owned by the same owner and quit a few weeks before the crime. The King County Prosecutor’s Office has charged him with first-degree murder.
Court documents indicate that after the shooting, the man fled toward Chicago. A few days later in Kenosha, Wisconsin, his mother, Rena Oneal, and stepfather, Rodney Brushwood, were killed in their home. Kenosha police link these killings to Fleming. Neighbors remember the couple as quiet, hardworking people who tried to help their son.
Fleming is in custody in Chicago. He is to be taken first to Seattle, where he will answer for the killing at the gas station.
