Democrat Octavio Hernandez has won the race for Florida House District 51, defeating incumbent Republican Hillary Holey by just over 3,000 votes. It is the first time in more than a decade that Polk County will be represented in the state Legislature by a Democrat. Hernandez’s victory contributed to Republicans losing their supermajority in Tallahassee, though they still control both chambers of the state Legislature.
According to the Polk County Supervisor of Elections office, Republicans recorded higher turnout countywide than Democratic voters did. Even so, Hernandez won in his district. The politician attributes his success to years of work with residents and to support extending beyond his own party’s electorate.
“It wasn’t only Democrats who voted for me. This is a decidedly Republican area, and I understood that,” he said. In his view, some voters backed him because they wanted a focus on issues affecting the whole community, regardless of political affiliation.
Hunter Branstner, chairman of the Polk County Young Republicans, interprets the result differently. He acknowledged that some Republican voters may have supported the Democratic candidate, but noted that this does not signal a lasting change in the political preferences of the entire county.
“Overall, Republicans in Polk County stick with the Republican Party. They still support their candidates,” he said. Branstner also expressed hope that during the upcoming legislative session, members of both parties will work together to address residents’ most pressing concerns, especially those involving infrastructure and schools.
Hernandez named similar priorities and said he plans to build relationships with politicians from both parties. “The election is over, and we are here to represent the people,” he said, declaring his readiness to work across party lines.
